I heard the original mix of “Fenix” earlier this year on Digital Fusion, a new sublabel from Julius The Mad Thinker. I thought highly of the B-Side track, an acid stomper called “Psychosis,” but the way little bits of 303 smut seemed to spill over and augment the afro-latin rhythms of “Fenix” was compelling as well, though I received the record too late to share.

Earlier this month Terry Hunter got his hands on it and worked it over like George Foreman for T’s Crates. There’s a heavier emphasis on the acid in Terry Hunter’s re-touches, plus vocals from T’s Box frequent collaborator Black Widow. And I remember again what I found so compelling. What happens when you mix media, using something odd and decidedly un-smooth like the squeals of a TB-303 in a soulful house track? The results might not be for everyone but I find it invigorating, adding an edge that cuts through. The Emmaculate Acid Mix really gives you a full 360 view of the concept in action: keys layered above and below the slamming percussion and the bellowing squelch.
