Ninja Tune: May 12 2017 at Smartbar

    Ninja Tune presents…
    Actress (DJ)
    Jlin (Live)
    Hieroglyphic Being
    John FM

On Friday, May 12, Ninja Tune descends on Smartbar Chicago for its first label-presented show in Chicago since 2011. Joining them for the cause are Actresss, Jlin, Hieroglyphic Being and John FM, together performing a late-night exercise in dance music from the worldwide periphery.

Actress, whose most recent album AZD comes via Ninja Tune this month, is back in tighter form than ever, earning high praise for the new work from Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, THUMP and High Snobiety among many others. Having built a loyal legion of fans in clubgoers and critics alike through productions on Ninja and his own Werkdiscs imprint—as well as Honest Jon’s, Thriller and Nonplus Records—he comes to Chicago for a DJ set to show off his skills as a selector and tastemaker, too.

Kindred UK indie label spirit Planet Mu (OFFICIAL) is home to Gary, IN-based Jlin, who will perform live one week ahead of releasing her sophomore album Black Origami. In the past her moody and highly percussive productions have earned her acclaim at FACT Magazine, The FADER and SPIN, and at Smartbar ticketbuyers will be afforded an advance peek at the newest in her rhythmic arsenal.

Local legend Jamal Moss, AKA Hieroglyphic Being, comes into the fold at the peak of his global visibility. Following lauded releases on Soul Jazz Records (Official Page), Rvng Intl. and Ninja Tune’s own imprint Technicolour, his often-acidic and always experimental compositions have caught the attention of critics at Pitchfork as well as fellow artist support from A Made Up Sound, Midland, HUNEE and more.

Completing the bill is Detroit-based DJ and producer John FM, who caught the attention of fellow Michigander Omar-S and emerged with two celebrated singles on his FXHE Records imprint. His selections are both timeless and astutely dialed in to the ephemeral energy of his listeners, a quality honored by Resident Advisor in enlisting him for their revered mix series late last year.
