Tragedies don’t just disappear…Chicago aids Japan this Thursday

It’s been over 2 months since a catastrophic earthquake recorded at 9.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Japan, creating a tsunami of such massive proportions that it swept over cities and farmland. Hundreds of thousands were killed, thousands missing and the devastation has yet to stop. There were explosions and leaks of radioactive gas at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and numerous fires ignited releasing radioactive material into the atmosphere. Traces of radiation were found in Tokyo’s water. Nuclear officials say that this crisis is on the same level as the Chernobyl disaster.

The official death toll has been quoted as 14,133 and more than 13,346 people are said to be missing. More than 130,000 people are in temporary shelters and tens of thousands more have had to evacuate their homes.

This is not a tragedy that will go away in one month, one year, not even 20 years. The rebuilding process has not even begun because the after effects are continuing to spiral out of their control.

Watch this video, one of so many chronicling the epic proportions this earthquake has cost:

Terrence Parker in Chicago This Friday!

Okay guys, this Friday May 1st is the big day… this month’s cover story and all around awesome producer/DJ Terrence Parker will be coming from Detroit to rock Chicago! He will be at Zentra Nightclub along with Rees Urban, Rhyno and Vinsanity and it’s going to be one heck of a night. Seriously. He can beat juggle, scratch and play the most awesome inspirational House music. He throws in lots of Gospel tracks, and I’m a big sucker for that!

Not only that, but me and my brother from another mother Carlos will be teaching a free House Dance class at the club from 10pm-11pm! You don’t need to get on any list for that, just walk on in and tell them you’re there to get your House on :)

To get on the party list (should you not make the class)…. click here.

Hope to see you all there!!!

WHEN: Friday, May 1st (11pm-4am); House dance class (10pm-11pm)

Fun Weekend = Sick Monday

me with Lito and Master Kev

Zentra

It’s HOT! What the f–k? Chicago summer is the lover who left too soon, tries to come back, and you want them to GO AWAY! I’ve moved on, bring back the cold please!!!

From Thursday through Sunday my life has been on a non-stop no-sleep rollercoaster of places to go and people to see. Thursday night after Betty’s and having the unfortunate circumstance of people bumrushing my place, I had to pick up my doctor brother from O’Hare early Friday. He is running the Chicago marathon on Sunday. After being in traffic for over 3 hours, I tiredly deposit him at his hotel, take an hour fake-nap, then am up again to have dinner with him at a very slow Italian restaurant in boystown called Angelina’s. (Never go there!) Later that night I have to drop off the October issue magazines all over the Friday night clubs plus collect money. I go Leo’s Den, Kita’s Lounge and the Shop all on the southside. Then we see Madd Soul briefly at Cuatro and end the night at Zentra.

Early Saturday evening we go and check out the History of House 2 at the Congress Theater. There is door drama/list inconsistencies, even though I repeat over and over again that 5 Magazine is an official sponsor of the event! After enough hissy-fitting, they let me and Rees in and we go backstage so I can take the necessary pictures of all the “stars of yesterday.” Singers Robin S., Crystal Waters, Shannon plus DJs, DJs and more DJs in both rooms and every crevice in between. We are with Dave Sabat and NY’s Master Kev, and eventually we take our ringing ears over to Cat’s Meow to hear Kev play. The rest of the night is a mad blur as every one of us in that place tried to be THE champion alcoholic. I’m surprised Arman had any liquor left. By the end of the night poor rowdy Kev (who did a great job DJing by the way) took the prize, yelling and insisting on more drinks. And then more! He refused to leave the club, so I kindly suggested we club him with the mop so he’ll pass out. (I look out for my friends.) We ended up not having to do that as he eventually passed out himself. As did all of our retarded selves at some point shortly after… even my brother Lito blacked out, and he’s usually quite sane.

And joy of joys, after a mere 2 hours of drunken sleep, I wake up in a hurry and try to catch my brother running in Sunday morning’s marathon. I am delirious, hoarse and suicidal. Zombie party girl coming down on zero fuel. Let’s just say after $60 in driving-around-cab money, 4 miles of walking in the hot sun, 2 poster boards and 1 big Filipino flag…. not to mention going up to Boystown, the UIC campus and near the finish line….I did not catch my brother once! I was pissed. I wanted to cheer him on and get pictures… this marathon was very special. We eventually reunite with him at a downtown hotel, have a crappy lunch at the Water Tower’s Foodlife court, then later have an even worse dinner up north topped by an argument with a random pig. I’m so coming down with a fever.

Monday morning. Awesome! I have a fever!

Happy Anniversary 5!

I know I’ve been quite absent from my blog lately, and it’s basically because my life is at a standstill of sorts. I’ve been working hard at promoting URBAN’S HOUSE (which by the way has been an awesome party with lots of love from our REAL friends!)… not to mention gearing up for our 3-YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY! It will be next Friday, Sept. 5th @ Zentra, and we will have this month’s cover story Sandy Rivera (aka Kings of Tomorrow) as our guest DJ along with Rees and David Sabat. I’m very excited because Sandy lives in England now and hasn’t been to the States in like 7 years. His music is incredible, so all of you who live in Chicago please come through. Email me at czarina@5chicago.com and I can put you and as many of your friends down for my all night long guest list. This year me and my dancers won’t be doing a dance performance, which is a first for us. I just think the space at Zentra is too hard to pull off a show where everyone can see properly. They used to rope off a section for us right in front of the DJ booth, but everyone would crowd the front so no one behind could see, plus the lights were just too dark. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve jumped or turned or flipped and had to sit there discombobulated for 10 seconds trying to figure out where I was in space.

Another mini-event I’m doing is with old 5 Magazine writer/DJ Doug Brandt, who owns a really cool late night Pizza joint/bar right on the corner of Halsted and Roscoe. We will be having House DJs play from 3-10pm on Saturday August 30th… the patio will be open, lots of cheap drinks and great pizza, and a makeshift dancefloor for those who want to get down.

Tortured Weekend

Christian Urich of Tortured Soul @ Double Door

Drunk, no sleep, good times, music, clubs, drinking, airport, cabs, drinking, clubs, music, drunk, no sleep, airport, poop. That was my weekend. Oh and collecting money from clubs which is never fun. Friday evening was Amp Fiddler and Tortured Soul at the Double Door, then Tony Touch at Zentra. Tony’s style reminds me of Jazzy Jeff… he plays anything and everything from House (yes he does play House) to old-school Hip-Hop to funk to soul to pop. I think the highlight of the evening was when he played Evelyn Champagne King’s “Love Come Down” and had everyone singing.

My man Rees was taking me with to his gig in Minneapolis the next day, and he sternly reminded me several times that night “No afterhours!” “Of course not!” I blink. We then go to my girls Peanut and Bekah’s afterhours until 10am Saturday. Vodka is seeping through my bloodstream and I can barely see. We get maybe 3 crappy hours of fake sleep and have to head out to O’Hare for our flight. I am cranky, mean and pissed at my lack of self-control. By the time we get to Minneapolis we are better, and ended up having a fantastic time. The hotel was nice, the promoters were super cool and the club (First Avenue) was awesome. We had a great time at the party and I was so proud of Rees’ set, he really really rocked it. The people were very nice, save for one drunken a-hole who said some ignorant shit at the end of the night. No one says shit about Rees! (Unless it’s me.) I swear if this wasn’t his gig and I had to make nice I would have spit on the guy’s eyeball and kicked him in his vagina. Back to the hotel for 2 hours of fake-unreal drunken sleep then go back to the airport. I’m dying.

First Avenue Minneapolis

When we get home at 11am Sunday morning, the house is a giant bathroom thanks to Luigi’s deadly diarrhea from the medication. Yeah! It’s a feces party and all we want to do is sleeeeeeeeeeep.
