The 5 Magazine Five Year Anniversary Project

Here it is! 5 Magazine’s 5 Year Anniversary trailer…this is from months and months of us running around interviewing people and checking out Chicago’s many House music events. You have NO IDEA how much work this took to arrange and interview 40 different artists, edit their videos and bug them for a free song lol. A big thank you to each and every artist for contributing their time and efforts to us, it is very much appreciated.

A lot of people have had the misconception that this is a trailer for a documentary…this is a trailer for the multimedia project wherein each artist has his own separate video interview and each one donates a free track. I guess you’ll just have to wait and see! :)

Thank you to Eric “esmoove” Miller for spending 9 hours of final editing time with me for this trailer, your help was invaluable.

The 40 individual artist videos and songs will launch on August 16th, 2010.

Enjoy everyone!

p.s. (Now I can get some sleep!)

The Chosen Few Picnic

What can I say this year was my favorite one so far!

Here’s a short little drunk video I made of the picnic… you’ll see guest diva vocalist Rochelle Fleming, an appearance by Frankie Knuckles and Andre Hatchett and Wayne William onstage. Also me and my friends hiding in the bushes during a brief rain spell. Oh and 20,000 Househeads living and loving :)

We were not in the mood to do the get-there-at-4am-and-get-a-good-spot-then-be-there-all-day camping style, so we opted instead to lug a few chairs, some drinks and several boxes of 5 Magazine. We got there pretty late, and with the really bad traffic didn’t get to settle down until about 5pm.

Regardless, it was DOPE. The weather was just right, the music was awesome, all our friends were there and everything was very well organized. This year we weren’t the safe haven for white folks like we usually are, and instead looked more like a Latino/Filipino coop on our little corner to the right of the stage. Danced, drank, took lots of pictures, danced, drank some more and had the best of times. Can’t go wrong with sunshine and House music!

There were also quite a few freak shows as expected: that girl with the giant christmas balls around her neck and the cameraman following her around…she probably had a cable access show. And then that girl dancer in red up onstage…oh my lord that was painful.

Big big thanks and hugs to the Chosen Few for yet another amazing and inspiring event, this truly is THE House music event of the year for Chicago! Those of you who don’t live here, put next year’s picnic in your calendar because this is IT.

We Won Best Dance Class!

This has been a WONDERFUL week! I just found out the House dance class taught by me and my play brother Carlos won the Chicago Reader’s Best of 2010 award for Best Dance Class!!! Yeah!!!! Considering we were the new kids in the block, this is really quite awesome. Thanks so much to the Breakdance Chicago School for giving us the class and believing in us :)

Black Coffee in Chicago

All right everyone…we’re gearing up for next month’s issue, and boy what a lineup we have! I got to interview South Africa’s Black Coffee while he was on his U.S. tour so check out this video I shot and edited of his stay here…clips from his interview, his set at Boom Boom Room, the DJs that opened for him and all the people that came to see him!
