Paul Johnson Benefit at SmartBar

Comments Off

Here’s some footage of the recent benefit we put together for Paul Johnson at SmartBar. It was a truly amazing and unforgettable night… everybody came out to celebrate the genius that is House music legend Paul Johnson. We had featured guests Farley Jackmaster Funk, Stacy Kidd, Glenn Underground, Gant-Man, Eric Martin, Melvin Meeks, RaShaan Houston and Rees Urban and myself as residents.

See for yourself! Chicago holds it down!!!

Running Around Filming DJs

So the BIG PROJECT has begun, which entails me running around filming and setting up mini video interviews with Chicago’s biggest and most influential DJs/Producers (and there are tons of them, God bless Chicago!)

Monday itinerary: Ron Carroll at Boom Boom Room

Ron Carroll and a whole bunch of people at Boom Boom Room. Ron doesn't drink and I told him to hand over that bottle of Grey Goose to me, but someone beat me to it!

Thursday itinerary: Frankie Knuckles, Deeon, Stacy Kidd and Paul Johnson
Frankie and Deeon had to reschedule last minute, so I head out to Berwyn at this place called Tiger’s where Stacy Kidd plays every week. Sound system is banging and quite a little crowd up in there!

Stacy Kidd at Tiger's.

Next up is Paul Johnson, who is the scheduled guest for our Thursday residency Urban’s House at Betty’s.

After our party, me Rees and AJ Dubbz head back to my house for some afterparty aerobics. We decide to try out the Obama game I got, but there was so much shit inside the box that in our present state AJ decided to make up his own rules. We didn’t even know what was going on but it was fun spinning the wheel and then spinning it some more when we didn’t like the number that came up.

AJ was also quite the hit with my evil moody bird Julius. He said he used to mate Macaws (how does one do that?) and was picking up Julius in cool sacrificial-bird type ways.

Friday itinerary: Bad Boy Bill
Friday night we are running late and head over to the labyrinth that is Vision Nightclub. We are led to Bill’s dressing room, which as it turns out was the same dressing room we were in when me and my dancers performed with CeCe Peniston last year. He is cordial and sweet as ever, and we stay for his whole set. It was harder fare than I’m used to, but I enjoyed it a lot and his scratching is just unfuckingbelievable. I want to learn how to scratch! I bet you I’d be good at it too since I’m half Flip, and Filipinos always win the DMC, right?

Let’s Have a Basement Party!

Hi kiddies! It’s that time of the month again where 5 Mag has its monthly party at Smartbar! I’m real excited because for this show we have Paul Johnson, Mr. Wonderful, Carlos Vazquez & Rees Urban. It’s this Wednesday April 21st, so for those of you in Chicago stop on through!

Paul Johnson chilling at the afterparty... my crib!

Boom Boom Room, Chicago’s (and possibly the world’s?) longest running House night celebrated its 18-year anniversary on Monday. They brought in Kevin Hedge from Blaze along with locals Jesse de la Pena and Lego. 5 Magazine was a proud co-host for the night, and the party was a great mixture of friends you don’t usually see, smoke, heat, shots and dancing bodies everywhere. Everyone looked really happy to be there, and the vibe was very celebratory. Of course there are always those 1 or 2 bitchy drag queens that I’d really love to trip, but hey I controlled myself :)

Armando Tribute Party

DJ Emanuel, Terry Hunter, Mike Dunn, Paul Johnson & Eric Martin

This past Thursday was the tribute to Armando (RIP) party at Betty’s, and it was truly an amazing party. Some of his closest friends played: Terry Hunter, Mike Dunn, Paul Johnson, Emanuel and Eric Martin all to benefit Armando’s family. You can hear their moving recollections of the man in our Armando Tribute from February 2008, which was one of our biggest feature stories ever. So many people came to dance and celebrate this man’s legacy, and we are so thankful to everyone who came and showed love.
