Tortured Souls

Tortured Soul @ Double Door

Last weekend I did a last minute trip to New York, which was so very needed for me and my sanity. That city is my muse, and the economy has kept me from going there as often as I’d like. Watching dance classes, clocking in countless walking miles and painful Chinese massages were some of the treats I indulged in.

This past Friday, 3 very talented musicians from Brooklyn called Tortured Soul performed at the Double Door. Always a crowd favorite, this must have been the 5th time I’ve caught their show. I interviewed them briefly backstage before the show, so look out for their cover story in next month’s issue.

Danny Krivit @ his 718 party

My New York weekend trip has been very pleasant and low-key… lots of Chinese massages and Filipino and Indian food eating. I didn’t even go to my favorite Saturday night Shelter party. The only event I went to was Danny Krivit’s monthly 718 Sessions party and that was more of a business thing. Danny will be on the cover of our June issue, and the Martinez Brothers (who were his guests that Sunday) will be gracing the August issue. It was a Sunday tea party (6pm-12am), and everyone looked like they had been up from the night before. TMB and Danny were amazing.

By the way all of you need to come out this Friday May 9th to the May issue release party at Cuatro (2030 S. Wabash). It will be DJ Lego and a 6-piece band playing House and Latin all night long… these guys are sickening! There’s actually lots of shit going on this Friday… Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw, Osunlade, a new House club is opening… I think it’s awesome that our city is blessed with so many options for GOOD House music!

Stuff I’m Doing Here

Wunmi and her drummers performing

For all you internet addicts, you all need to go to Korea.

While here in NYC I went to my usual haunts such as the Soulgasm party on Wednesday followed by Cielo to hear Kevin Hedge and Louie Vega. Friday was a party at Brooklyn’s Langston Club with Rich Medina and an awesome live performance by singer/dancer/activist Wunmi. It was a nice surprise to run into Jamie 3:26 there (for some reason we always run into each other in this city), as he had just finished playing at a party in Jersey.

Saturday is of course the Shelter, my favorite House night ever! We stayed there from 5am till 2pm, and even ran into Wayne Williams by the DJ booth. The DJ of the night was the same as usual, annoying, playing with the EQ’s till your ears wanted to explode and trainwrecking like there’s no tomorrow. Since I was with two DJs going there for the first time, they could not believe how terrible he was and they were in awe at all the bad blends. I told them to just sit back and enjoy the experience, because that is what the Shelter is all about.

I’ve taken Vogueing, House and Gymnastics classes, bought tons of clothes and got to see good (and real) dancers at clubs again. None of that step-side-to-side-let’s-just-grind-and-act-sexy dance moves everyone always does. I love it here!

NYC and Boydom

I’m in New York for 2 glorious weeks!!! Yes! I’m staying in the same apartment I stayed in last year, a tiny 4th-floor walkup/workout on the East Village. I’m by a thousand vegetarian and Filipino restaurants, a mosque, 50 bodegas and tiny little everything stores. I’m so excited to be away from everyone, you have no idea.

Valentines Day was cute. I got some pretty underwear and a matching Tiffany’s toggle necklace to go with the bracelet I got a few weeks ago. It’s about time I started getting some gifts! This Mother-Teresa-no-presents-for-me-on-special-days style for the past 2 years was NOT working for me. Can you believe…Birthday, Christmas, nothing? 2 years? Boys today aren’t made from the same cloth as their elderly counterparts.

Speaking of which, my man recently got my Fivestarboogie logo tattooed on his back shoulder and it looks great! Before that he had a tacky logo of his ex, which essentially looked like an open tampon, so thank God that shit is covered up.

Jaded

Louie Vega at the White Party in Club Langston, Brooklyn

The last 4 days have been a non-sleeping blur. Friday night I head up to Brooklyn to hear Louie Vega spin at a White party, and it was incredibly festive and white. Saturday (or should I say Sunday morning) at 6am I head to the Shelter, and stay until the lights go on at an early 2pm. By then I was already cranky and tired having lugged my magazines all over the damn city, and I had an hour to go home and get my butt to the airport. I get back to Chicago at 10pm Sunday night, shower and change, then head over to support my boy Sean Smith’s night at Betty’s. I sooo wanted to stay in and crash, but a bunch of my friends were waiting on me.

After this last NY trip, I have to say that the dancers and househeads over there are uber-JADED. As in evil, mean, jealous, harboring mega-hateration. They all have incredibly fragile egos, scary-random tempers, and serious denial issues. I guess living in that city can be tough and create serious personality defects . Everyone is incredibly talented, but they will hold that talent over everyone’s heads and constantly compare compare compare. I think I was better off keeping my distance than now being in the mix.
