Note: The 5 Magazine DJ Series was a monthly CD series released in a limited edition from March 2007 to November 2008. We featured mixes from legends such as Frankie Knuckles, Gene Hunt and Terry Hunter to the next generation of hard-working Chicago House Music heroes, distributed for free on CD in the Chicago area.
Did you miss your monthly fix? The 5 Magazine DJ Series is back for the month of July with a powerful mix by legendary Chicago DJ and producer DJ Gene Hunt.
Gene Hunt needs no introduction here – if you don’t know him by sight and sound, you may as well pack it in. Tracing the bare outline of his career, Gene began as a young protégé to the late, great Ron Hardy, and through a career that’s spanned nearly three decades has found himself in turn a mentor to the upstart DJs that have come after him. You can see him every Monday at Betty’s (1600 W. Grand until 4am) and at more guest spots than you can count.
“My current philosophy is to combine material of substance on vinyl as well as things on CD,” Gene told us. “That’s important – I really support the vinyl movement. It’s our job and our duty as pioneers and educators to enhance and stimulate.
“I think this mix for 5 Magazine’s DJ Series has come out legendary! I went down into the basement to record, and I wanted to give you a flavor of my journey through House Music. So it’s more of an educational mix, from 0:00 all the way to 69:47. When you get to the end of the mix, you might feel a little upset, so we might have to do a “Part II” down the line. I attained a certain level where I became more spiritually and emotionally involved in this mix. I put my soul into it and took you from where I started to the point where I am now.”
