House Music DJ/Producer. Chicago.

Bio: Born June 6, 1969, Spencer Kincy was giant in Chicago’s House Music revival – part of the second wave of younger DJs and producers that took the music of the early 1980s, rubbed it up and dropped it in places like 500 West Cermak, Medusa’s and the Vault. A lot of well-known DJs and producers from the Chicago House Music scene – Mark Farina, Sneak, Derrick Carter, and dozens of others – were a part of that movement, too. Spencer Kincy’s records and DJ mixes would earn a cult following throughout the 1990s, with releases on Relief (with Derrick Carter, Spencer was one of the three architects of the label when Cajmere began the iconic Chicago label) and later Cyclo, Peace Frog and Chicago’s legendary Guidance Recordings, a label he was closely identified with when it began. Most of his releases were issued under the alias “Gemini,” his sign of the Zodiac.

And as gritty, as grimy, as jarring and noisy as his productions could be, he could also make them sing. Gentle, almost delicate Deep House tracks that evoked the influence of Larry Heard could be backed with a jarring track of completely abstract sounds – a thunder that would shake the 16 inch reinforced concrete walls of a warehouse. He could work with live musicians or filter a disco loop, pound it into the ground and make it more inspirational than any gospel choir, as he did on “Stand Up” (Relief). The output was eclectic, and sometimes it missed its mark, but he always pushed the envelope forward.

Spencer developed increasing issues with his health shortly after he turned 30, as is described in a series of articles here, and is no longer active in the music scene. He still lives in Chicago. -TM
